UGG: The Hidden Feminism

A response to the article “Miniskirts and UGG Boots

Just the other day I was thinking about how fashion trends are identified with the various stages of the women’s liberation movement, which makes this article so timely to me. From the corsets up to the turn of the century and the transition to looser flapper dresses, and finally leading up to the short dresses and slim jeans of the major 1960’s feminist movement, it’s interesting to note that the trend is more and more toward freedom of movement and comfort. Women generally will still want to look pretty, but there is now a desire to have more of an edge. A new value has emerged around comfortable beauty, and a functional aesthetic.

The UGG Boot/Mini Skirt combination captures this perfectly. Mini skirts are associated with lots of leg, easy access and often a certain degree of implied promiscuity. UGG boots, on the other hand are anything but sexy, yet carry a high degree of fashion clout, major comfort, and the flexibility and endurance of movement that high heels can never match.

One might even say that in the fashion world the UGG/Mini skirt combo is a parallel for the Virgin/Whore dichotomy of female archetypes. Stars like Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Heidi Klum and even Brittney Spears have been heralded as major sex symbols, yet are also known for valuing a strong family life.

Our contemporary female icons are deeply rooted in our cultural desire to allow women the freedom to fulfill both archetypal roles. And fashion is a major way in which the treatment and behavior of women has been mirrored in our society. So ladies, grab your shortest skirt, your favorite pair of UGG boots and show the world that nothing can limit you!

Ugg it on!

I have come around to the idea that the UGG Classic is really quite a fashionable boot.  A friend of mine wears her Classic Short Chestnut boots with everything: skirts, shorts, dresses, pajamas, you name it.  She wears them in winter and in summer, and always looks so comfortable.  Best of all, she makes it work. Any outfit she pairs with her Classic Boots, she rocks it! Everytime I see her it’s a new epiphany of, “Huh! I guess you CAN wear UGGs with that!” Imagine how freeing that is, to let go of footwear prejudice and embrace that you create your own fashion everyday. And why not let the incredibly luscious UGG boot accent your visual statement for the day!

What about you? What is your favorite outfit to wear with your UGGs?

It’s finally Summer. Time to bust out your…boots?

It’s popping up all over New York, the New York Times,  and hence the rest of the world. That’s right, summer dresses with boots. It’s a fashion juxtaposition that I happen to think is pretty hot (pardon the pun). I am not alone in this, the trend has been seen in boutiques across the country and on runways all over the world. “Summer boots” as they are now known have become a staple in many women’s wardrobes. As the seasons progress it just becomes too difficult to part with your favorite pair of boots and this phenomenon has created an aesthetic all it’s own. The heft of a boot takes the tooth-achingly sweet edge off of a flowery summer frock and adds interest to the summer wardrobe, not to mention adding a little balance to that LBD for a night out on the town. This look has even been spotted on bridesmaids! Now, who’s ready to wake their UGG boots from their summer slumber? They’ll keep your feet cool in temperatures up to 80 degrees!  Do you wear boots in the summer? Let us know what you think of this trend in the comments section!

Harry Potter Star Loves UGG, Hates Acting

Teen Vogue has announced that Emma Watson (a.k.a. Hermione) is giving up acting as soon as the Harry Potter series of movies is complete.

“Until something comes along that I feel as strongly about as I did Hermione - like, I felt that -it was life or death - I don’t want to act again.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever been this tired in my life. I literally wear my pajama bottoms to set. I roll out of bed and put on a hoodie and some UGG boots.” says Watson.

Is UGG your “go to” brand for that extra comfort when you’re exhausted? I know mine sure is!

Size Matters

We can all generally agree that small scale models of things are cute, or at the very least funny. Miniature poodles, for instance, are incredibly adorable (though you may fight the urge to kick them when they start their yippy bark.) The ipod nano is cute in a delightfully functional way, just as key chains of the Eiffel tower are completely non-functional.  So, whether you have kids, want kids or even like kids, you have to acknowledge the cuteness factor of small footwear. Especially UGG Australia footwear. For those of us with big feet, it’s incredible to see any shoe that is smaller than a womans size 7.  Imagine how stunningly bizarre to hold a shoe that fits a kids size 1? It’s friggin’ tiny! You could add up three of those and still not have my foot! Add into the equation the lush fuzzy fleece, and we’re looking at the most cuddle-able UGG boot imaginable! A Classic Short boot, only half my shoe size! Stunning, I tell you. You can even forgo the tiny person to wear the shoes, just take a gander at a collection of UGG kids shoes and slippers and marvel at the small model versions of the boots we love!

UGG for Summer

It’s June, and Violet Wallingford has, for the first time, wore UGG boots while it’s sunny. With a skirt. She does not live in SoCal, she is not blonde, and her favorite word is not “like.” Yet, this is one of the most comfortable (and cute!) outfits she has worn in quite a while.

Let’s take a look at current styles: over sized sunglasses, summer scarves, jackets with sun dresses. Clearly the fashion world is attempting to bridge the gap between summer and winter to create a unified look that is adaptable for any temperature.  UGG boots are perfect for this new weather-fusion style, as they represent the best of both winter and summer: warmth and cozy comfort mixed with style and surfer trendiness. One could even argue that yes, UGG was not fully in style last season, but THIS summer UGG is a MUST! So, come on! Press away the last of the winter doldrums, grab some fuzzy boots, and get your summer comfort on!

Coquette and Fluff Scuff and Pearle, oh my!

Lately I’ve been craving UGG slippers. I will grant you that this is a little weird since summer is just starting and we’re starting to experience 80 degree weather. I just don’t care. I want fluffy pink slippers to put on my feet after a long day of constricting shoes and standing and moving and walking. I want soft, girly luxury to soothe my aching feet and make me feel like I’m at home and my day is over. I’ll wear my UGG Australia slippers with jeans for a little cozy/homey flair, or with my sundress after the sunlight hours as a rebellion against the flip flops of the day. I’ll take off the 3 inch heels after a night out and wear my slippers with a ball gown and a sweatshirt! I will champion the clashing of styles, and from the tipsy-tops of my toes I will bask in  UGG comfort!

Sharing the Joy of UGG

For the past week I’ve spoken with a woman from the Bay Area about UGG boots. We’ve talked about the Classic Short, the Sundance II, and the Swell Tall, discussing the fit, comfort and fashion that applies to each of these very unique boots.  We haven’t really talked about anything aside from UGG, yet the enthusiasm we share for these shoes ignited a friendly connection. The Swell Tall is my personal favorite UGG boot, and I was very excited for her to try this style, and I was so happy when she called to tell me the style and size worked for her! It may seem silly, but it genuinely brings me joy that this stranger I’ve never met was able to find an UGG boot that is beautiful and fits her. That shared happiness over the simplest of things made my day!

They always say that it’s the simple things that matter. So, what chance encounters and conversations have your UGG boots brought you?

Fake UGG Boots for Fake People

theuggadillo1by:  the UGGadillo

Armadillos sleep for 17 hours a day, but perpetrators beware:  the UGGadillo sleeps with one eye open!  My super-glue tongue can swab an insect nest bone dry.  That’s right, the UGGadillo can slurp up 40,000 ants in one sitting.    So watch out fake UGG dealers.  Mess with the UGGadillo and I will lick you like you were the last lollipop on the earth!

But even worse than fake UGG dealers are fake UGG consumers who KNOWINGLY purchase fake UGG products.  Shame unto you and your procreants!

The UGGadillo keeps a copy of Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard on the back of my loo.  It’s a great read that describes the business values of Patagonia, an outdoor company synonymous with quality, just like UGG Australia.

Patagonia believes that all consumers are not created equal.  Chouinard started the company as a “dirt bag” climber living out of a sleeping bag, and he believes that dirt bags are some of the best consumers.  As a dirt-burrowing little buckaroo myself, the UGGadillo has been saying this forever.

Dirt bags and other conscious consumers spend the extra dollar to make sure that purchases last.  They would never buy a fake UGG to save a few bucks.  They realize that every purchase is an investment, and because money is always tight, they don’t just throw money into investments that are going to fall apart the way a fake UGG disintegrates after just a few wears.

Because the things they buy last, they have a chance to bond with their prized possessions and begin to love them.  Just like when you wear your trusty UGG boots over the trials and joys of years, you cherish them like a faithful basset hound always snuggling at your feet.

Purchasing fake UGG boots is as shallow as a one night stand.  You get the empty rewards of quick comfort and easy status (”OH look at those new UGG boots and that fine piece of meat on her arm!”) without investing any of your time or money.

But the alarm clock goes off and your snuggle bunny is gone and there’s a strange itching sensation where no one wants to itch.  Oh well, you slip on those once-snuggly fake UGG boots, only to find that the glue used to attach the fake shearling is flaking off, giving you foot dandruff.  You sigh.  Easy come, easy go.

Lesson learned:  Don’t be a fake person.  Don’t enter fake relationships and don’t buy fake UGG products.

Live.  Love.  UGG.
