UGG Sighting
Last night I was watching Because I Said So on TV, which is a fun chick flick for a Sunday night. I was just vegging out, eating dinner in bed and suddenly I saw something in the movie that caught my attention: UGG! In one scene Diane Keaton is wearing white leggings and a white long sleeved shirt and looks to be Classic Tall Chestnuts as her character was lazing about the house watching old movies. Now, not many women can pull that look off but I’ve got to say that the former Annie Hall can still rock a bold outfit choice!

A few scenes later on comes Mandy Moore sporting her Classic Short Grey UGG boots with jeans and a sweater. I personally really like Mandy Moore as an actress, and she is just so neurotically lovable in this movie, the UGG boots only add to her appeal.

Iconoclastic Craze
As I was getting dressed this morning, I almost decided to wear my UGG boots. There is a new crispness to the air today, a grey foretelling of the oncoming Autumn. I decided to wear a flowy long dress, and feeling very hippie-fancy free I chose basic flip flops for my footwear of the day.
Then I got to thinking: perhaps UGG can be a part of the new hippie look. The majority of indie-chic fashion is based around comfort and freedom of movement. Lord knows a good number of hippies have lived in the woods or been surfers at one point or another, and what with pine needles and coarse sand some sort of shoes can be helpful. As most restaurants and stores will tell you being barefoot isn’t an option (no shirt, no shoes, no service!), so clearly the modern day mellow rebel needs something to wear on their feet.
Flip flops are great, but over a long period of time you kind of get sick of that flapping noise you make every time you move. Birkenstocks are a good sandal to take the place of flip flops but it is a rather cliche shoe for the environmentally and health conscious. If you think about it, UGGreally isn’t a bad choice. You get the comfort of bare feet, and the style of a fashion label. (Though that does spark the whole question of being a sell-out hippie if you bathe and wear nice shoes…)
Some of the UGG styles lend themselves quite well to the modern bohemian style. Take the new Gaviota for instance: a little Native American themed fringe in a sturdy but cute short boot. Not bad for your gauchos and peasant blouse.
If you have an inner flower child yearning for comfort, but clinging to style, why not take a look at what UGG Australia has to offer? You may be surprised at what you find.
Note: I mean no derogatory or generalized assumptions when using the term “hippie.” Whatever your associated ideas are with this title, feel free to read it as such.
A matter of perspective…
You know what’s fun to do? Judge other people. It’s a rather dreadful part of the human experience, but we all do it. And we judge the stupidest things too: “You did WHAT to your hair?” “You want to be THAT when you grow up?” “You asked WHO to prom?” It seems we never tire of telling people what we think of their choices, or mocking others to our friends. Sometimes it’s as though high school never ended.
Most of the judgments we make are purely superficial, and not really meant to harm. However, most of the time they are negative. So, for today I want to try something different: let’s take something we might not usually find aesthetically appealing, and find the good side! Let’s celebrate people’s bizarre and daring fashion choices:
First on the list:
Actress Lucy Davis on a break during filming. Let’s applaud her daring in color choices, and embracing comfort (and UGG!)in her hectic schedule!
Then, of course, Katie Price is always up for a daring move:
Who else do you know who would have the panache to carry off beautiful Classic Tall Sunflower boots with leopard print leggings? Ms. Price is doing her part to celebrate the 80’s!
Bruce Willis gets major points firstly for being man enough to wear a pair of UGG Classic boots! And of course, for paying respectful homage to the cavemen of latter years.

Last, but certainly not least, the adorable and talented Dakota Fanning. What inventiveness it takes to wear schoolgirl knee-high socks with a pair of UGG slippers! Her ingenuity is just a part of what makes her such a brilliant young actress.

So, how did that feel? Isn’t it just as much fun to decide to acknowledge the value of creative choices, over an accepted and mundane aesthetic? Let’s be daring, and who cares what others think!
All you need is UGG
Summer is almost over. The cool weather is starting up, getting a little chillier each morning and getting darker earlier in the evening. For many of us, getting dressed gets harder around this time. It becomes more about layers that can be taken off and put back on throughout the day to deal with the shifting temperatures.
Or, you could try something classic: UGG with a swimsuit.

Yeah. You heard me. I know, it sounds crazy, but Ms. Pam rocked her UGG/swimwear look on Baywatch. Perhaps you don’t want to follow her fashion footsteps, (let’s face it, there have been some doozies!) but you’ve got to give her props for daring!
Then again, we can also take a look at the fabulous Kylie Minogue:

Who else could look so effortlessly diva-esque and statuesque in a white unitard and UGG?
Come to think of it, look at the girls used by UGG to advertise their boots. Half the time they’re not even wearing clothes, just boots and a birthday suit!
So maybe your Fall wardrobe doesn’t have to change. Just add a pair of UGG boots to your summer gear and you are good to go! (And I dare you to try the Lady Godiva/UGG look…)
Knitting for UGG
I’ve decided that today is a day to celebrate knitting. It’s August, getting close to scarf weather, and UGG has a such a cute array of knitted boots and slippers! There is, of course, the Classic Cardy in the simple basic knit, the boot we know and love. But now UGG now offers the Classic Argyle Knit boot, with an argyle pattern knitted into the shoe itself! ( I don’t know about you, but I consider argyle to be one of the best patterns to ever grace a sock, shoe, or coat.) If you’re looking for a more rugged boot look for the Suburb Crochet Tall, which easily could have been made by your friendly neighborhood Grandma-biker gang. Last, but certainly not least are the Sweater Knit Scuffette and Sweater Knit Scufette Stripe slippers. For some reason the striped slippers make me think of Harry Potter, with their striped Gryffindor scarves as they play Quidditch! Maybe these slippers will get you your own little taste of magic…the magic of comfy toes!
Cleaning leads to UGG
For me, the past few days were the Weekend of Massive Reorganization. This entailed dishes, laundry, moving large pieces of furniture to different spots in the house, and sorting through papers, clothes and shoes that had miraculously migrated to corners of the living room.
There really isn’t much of a story in the reorganizing part; we all know what is entailed in creating a new room from the same furniture. What was interesting was the shoes. First, of course, is the fun of going through shoes to get rid of the ones that no longer fit or don’t match your current style. Or better yet, re-discovering shoes you’d forgotten you owned. Once we got through all the shoes we discovered the slippers. A whole basket full of slippers that I had never seen anyone wear. Originally, the idea had been that everyone would wear slippers in the house, since it’s a hardwood floor that attracts dirt and dust like there’s no tomorrow. Somehow, the slipper plan never quite happened and everyone just went around barefoot and accepted a life with dirty feet.
However, as soon as the pile of slippers was unearthed from the mound of shoes, an amazing thing happened: everyone decided it was time to wear slippers. And among this treasure trove of fuzzy shoes? UGG slippers! Suddenly, a pile of shoes in a basket was transformed to a neat line of sandals, shoes, and a cute little pair of Kids UGG Classic boots. To top it all off we were all wearing previously forgotten UGG slippers!
The moral of the story: Clean your house! You never know what glorious discoveries you’ll make in your own home.
To walk 1 mile in another persons shoes
There are distinct assumptions we can make based on the shoes a person is wearing. They may not be correct, or kind, or relevant in any way but there is often a seed of truth to the instant judgments we make. We got the hippies in Birkenstocks, runners wearing New Balance, and Manolo Blahniks always make me think of Sex and the City and the whirlwind, drinking, partying, decadent cosmopolitan life it presents. Even our childhood fairytales offer archetypes based on shoes. Cinderella, the sweetest virgin of them all wears pure glass slippers, while the determined and oft-times sassy Dorothy skips through Oz in red glittery slippers.
The shoes we wear characterize the roles we play. When I was in college studying theater one of my directors had a rule for rehearsals: you always had to rehearse your scenes in the shoes your character would wear. This was drawn from the belief that part of how we hold ourselves is altered by the shoes we wear. Just think how differently you feel in your body when wearing ballet flats or high stilettos. It’s almost as though certain shoes give you a license to access a part of your personality that you might not usually let out. I know I feel way saucier in boots and a short skirt than when I wear the same skirt with flip flops.
Feet and footwear seem to carry a strong significance for performers. I was reading an article the other day where Penelope Cruz stated that one of the first things she does when preparing for a role is to find and wear the shoes her character would wear. Quentin Tarrantino (director of Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill 1 and 2, and Pulp Fiction), pretty much always has a random shot of bare feet walking across a floor (especially if it’s Uma Thurman), and somehow it adds to the somewhat primal nature of his films. Bare feet often depict the “savage” or “nature child” in film and theater, while the “aristocrat” and those who are “civilized” are characterized by binding and expensive footwear. We can tell a lot about a person’s values, personality, and often their social status simply by glancing at their shoes.
On the other hand, there are also generic shoes that can work for almost any circumstance. For musical theater there are character shoes, simple Mary Janes with a basic timeless look, in black or tan, with heel heights varying from ¾” to 3”, and that’s it! They are worn to suit any time period, and their generic look is what adds to the versatility that makes them unique.

So, why write about performance and shoes on an UGG blog? Well, think about how those who wear UGG are defined; it completely depends on whom you ask. To a group of high school girls in LA, UGG Classic Short boots are THE thing to wear, but to the indie crowd of the same age group further up the West Coast, UGG signifies a lemming approach to fashion taste. UGG is one of the few brands where the persona you enact when wearing them can change depending on your social surroundings. In UGG you can be the hippie child who doesn’t wear socks and relaxes in neutral colored comfort, or you can be the high flying socialite in the most well know fleece lined boot in the world!

When we can be defined so sharply by our appearances and aesthetic choices, it seems a delightful relief and boon to have a brand that provides a plethora of podiatric personality!
To UGG and Back
I just got back from San Francisco. It was a glorious trip, with days spent at the Golden Gate Park, SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), a show at the Orpheum, and a couple of the best burritos ever!
Since I went with someone who used to live in The City, we wandered all over the different neighborhoods, going from grey, bay fog to sunny Haight Street in one day. I was soo glad I brought my UGG Swell Tall boots with me! I was able to wear a cute flowy dress and a summer scarf, so I was cool enough in the hot areas, and the UGG boots sure warmed my toes when the wind kicked in. And I definitely wasn’t the only one; walking down the street, especially in some of the hipper neighborhoods UGG was not an uncommon sight. Classic Short, Classic Tall, with jeans, skirts, and shorts!
I got back to southern Oregon slightly dejected to be leaving such an incredible city. Besides, it’s still incredibly hot here, so I’m not in full UGG mood yet. On the other hand, Fall is just around the corner, and San Francisco is only a 5-6 hour drive away!
The 80’s are coming! The 80’s are coming!
Ok, so the 80’s aren’t exactly coming, they’re already here. But for those of you who are a little behind the fashion curve, you may be just catching up. More and more styles are popping up every day with tons of 80’s inspired fringe, zippers and colors. Hello neon! But what I think is fantastic, is the Millenium twist. Somehow, designers today have taken those oh-so-outrageous 80’s styles and have made them much more, well, wearable! That’s why UGG boots are absolutely fantastic, because they are reminiscent of those ever popular moon boots we all used to wear (and you know you did!) but they are much less…Napolean Dynomite. I have a feeling that UGG boots are going to be more popular this year than even years prior, because they fit into the fashion swing of 2009 so well. So slip on your UGG Classic Short boots in any old color you fancy, and if you’re extra funky, get some super cool UGG Classic Short Metallic boots and rock those 80’s styles like you know you can.
UGGing up for Fall
All across America parents are making the pilgrimmage to their local (or not so local) shopping mecca with their kids to find the perfect “back to school” wardrobe. What’s important when creating the perfect, multi-seasonal wardrobe? Versatility! The school year spans more than one season and depending on where you live that can mean a huge change in the temperature. The biggest “investment” of the school shopping extravaganza is definitely footwear. How can you get the most versatile bang for your buck? Consider adding an UGG boot to that “back to school” shopping list. With UGG you get a stylish, comfortable shoe that will take you from one season to the next. The shearling will keep toes cozy at temperatures from 20- 80 degrees! It doesn’t get much more versatile than that!
