In Episode 33 of the HBO hit series “True Blood”, Pam, a sarcastic vampire and bar bouncer, wore Classic Short Magenta or Raspberry Rose Ugg boots with a matching jogging suit (above). Only genuine Ugg Australia boots come in those electric seasonal colors.  For fans of the show this may seem like a stylistic break for the preppy heel wearing vamp lieutenant, but for those who have read the Charlaine Harris novels, on which the show is based, it is not.  The Pam of the novels is often seen in matching pastel leisure wear, and though never specifically described as wearing sheep’s fleece she has been caught in penny loafers complete with shiny pennies.  The HBO vision of Pam is often seen in pink. What started out as a visual joke is escalating into a character trait.  Even Pam herself admits aloud, “Maybe I wear too much pink.” Ugg boots are a perfect alternative to Pam’s work wardrobe of scary extreme footwear and after being tortured by another character with silver chains a pair of classic Ugg boots in a bright color might we just the welcome refuge a scrubbed and recovering Pam would crave . . .other then blood.  Tune in this Sunday at 9pm for the True Blood’s Season 4 premier episode, “She’s Not There” on HBO.

WHO is that hansom man in sheepskin?

Paparazzi love to catch male celebrities with their guard down, way down. Walking their dog, sipping coffee and especially wearing their UGGs. That iconic UGG profile is easy to spot and says, “I am off the clock.  This is what I really like wearing.”  One such male, maybe you have heard of him, Tom Brady, three time Superbowl QB of the New England Patriots is making his love connection legitimate.  Mr. Brady is the new face of the Men’s UGG Australia brand.

DECKERS says: “He embodies the stylish casual attitude that is at the foundation of every product we make, and is as much a style icon off the field as he is a playmaker on it,” says Angel Martinez CEO and Chair of Deckers Outdoor Corp., UGG Australia’s parent company, of the hansom athlete.  We agree.  It doesn’t hurt that Tom Brady is very good looking out of the helmet, but as a male and a Californian to-boot Mr. Brady represents the original demographic of UGG wearer.  Since the brand’s arrival in the US of A,  female feet have spread the fleece gospel making a Men’s campaign desperately needed here. UGG says: ” . . . it’s easy to forget that we started as a men’s brand among California surfers,” said UGG(R) Australia President Constance X. Rishwain.”  Asking Tom Brady, a role model to many red blooded males, to make it ‘OK’ for men to wear classic UGG footwear again is just good sense.

BRADY says: “I have worn and loved the UGG brand for a long time.”  Expect to hear more about  Brady and his boots as this is a multi-year deal and Deckers hints  that Mr. Brady will “consult on product inspiration for future seasonal collections.”

What if Ugg and Jimmy Choo had a baby? Fashion scientists are always mixing styles in wild abandon looking for the next divine spark that will ignite a creative bonfire.  When footwear opposites UGG Australia and Jimmy Choo collaborate on a line of fleece footwear strange boot magic happens.   Accident of fate or fateful accident, such shoe hybrids are great food for thought.  Even as the Choo shock factor fades, the influence of the brand on brand contact can be seen in the upcoming 2011 Fall Ugg Collection.

Famed especially for their stylish heels the Jimmy Choo brand has altered very little of the Classic Ugg structure.  The Choo contribution relies heavily on the application of fringe and studs.  The animal prints are an exciting use of pattern previously seen only in the UGG kids collection.  I don’t know why Ugg hasn’t done it sooner.  You shoe scholars will be asking yourself the obvious question, “Why didn’t they add heels?  The most obvious design mod.”  My only conclusion is they wanted to play it safe, not re invent the wheel.  Ugg already has heeled shoes, which are not the primary draw. Choo was obviously only given the Classic collection to expand on. These are clearly be-dazzled UGGs not fleecy CHOOs.

If anything is to be taken from this it’s that anyone can modify a pair of Uggs to fit their style, the Ugg Classic really is a blank canvas to make your own footwear masterpiece.  Choo, unlike some other celebrity style lines (search ‘Jessica Simpson Birkenstocks’), hasn’t destroyed the essential virtues of the brand in the process of making their mark. Since no one got hurt maybe this is a really successful collaboration.   Choo seems to think so.  They carry all the variations they have created, oddly Ugg doesn’t.   Here’s what Jimmy Choo founder and CCO, Tamara Melloon has to say about how Choo-s and Uggs go together, “Other then Jimmy Choo, UGG Australia is the only other footwear I have in my wardrobe. I wear it at home in New York, on holiday in Malibu and as an essential travel accessory for my plane wardrobe. We are delighted to have created a special capsule that captures the best of both brands – the legendary comfort of UGG with the spirit of Jimmy Choo.” (*see footnote)

So the secret life of fashionistas everywhere is an Ugg life.  Chances are that this is not a two way design street.  Urban shoe devotees won’t see any black suede pumps with twin face sheepskin trim this fall, but you can dream.

Simple and perfect as the original UGG Australia design is, evinced by droves of fans and hoards of imitators, there are options for the UGG buyer. Everyone recognizes the classic outline of the aptly named Classic Collection, but the UGG Ultra Collection may not register on your fashion radar yet.  Both collections are available in Men’s boots and Womens.

Each collection has its own pluses, but any UGG shopper will be happier with their purchase if they have first compared the two with what they want from their fleece footwear. The UGG Classic features twin-face sheep skin in a rainbow of seasonal colors and patterns. The UGG Ultra Collection features a more tapered reinforced toe and a thicker robustly tread-ed sole that provides more stable traction then a Classic. The clearance of the taller sole saves the Ultra boot from much of the discoloration casual water damage causes to a Classic. When combined with the UGG water repellent a boot from the Ultra Collection should look better longer for the serious fleece lover.

While the fleece lining of a Classic boot will mold to the contours of your foot, the lasting arch support of the UGG Ultra is more substantial. Not only is the insole of an UGG Ultra padded with additional molded foam for arch support; it is replaceable! That means the brand new fleecy comfort of your UGG investment can be renewed countless times with a new insole.

Finally, on the question of origin and social justice the UGG Ultra Collection is made in New Zealand, not China or anywhere else. While it may not be as Australian as the fleece itself the UGG Ultra boot IS made down under. For some it may be worth the added cost to support local (more local) industry and keep the flavor of the UGG brand alive.

It was just brought to my attention that students of movement: the young, lithe and limber, elegant and exotic students at Performing Arts Dance Schools across the country practically live in UGG®s when they are not on stage.
